Morphological instability during directional epitaxy
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider the stability of a single step during epitaxial growth of a monolayer on a continuously supplied substrate in the presence of an imposed gradient in the deposition rate along the direction of growth. This allows control of instabilities that arise from asymmetries in the supply of atoms attaching from the upper and lower side of the step. We consider both a linear stability analysis of a mean-field terrace-step model and kinetic Monte-Carlo (KMC) simulation of an atomistic growth model. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

On Kinetically vs. Energetically Driven Growth Instabilities in Solid and Vapor Phase Epitaxy
A stress-induced kinetically-driven morphological instability is of general applicability to driven systems. The effect of stress on the reaction mobility for incorporation into the growing solid couples to stress variations along a perturbed planar growth front, resulting in amplification or decay of the perturbation depending on the sign of the stress. Experimentally we studied a model system...
متن کاملEffects of flow on morphological stability during directional solidification
Research involving the interaction of flow with morphological instability during directional solidification of binary alloys is reviewed. In general, flow may arise during the solidification process from thermal and solutal buoyancy, changes in density upon solidification, thermocapillary forces at free boundaries, or external forcing of the system. We focus primarily on the last of these, givi...
متن کاملShear stabilization of morphological instability during directional solidification
A linear stability analysis is performed on the interface formed during the directional solidification of a dilute binary alloy in the presence of a time-periodic flow. In general, the flow is generated by translating the crystal relative to the far-field flow in elliptical orbits parallel to the interface. The presence of this complex, unsteady flow can either stabilize or destabilize the syst...
متن کاملReversing radial segregation and suppressing morphological instability during vertical Bridgman crystal growth by rotation
During vertical Bridgman growth of an alloy crystal, local accumulation of solute at the interface center due to buoyancy often causes formation of a deep depression or pit and accelerates morphological instability. Through visualization of the freezing interface during directional solidification of succinonitrile containing ethanol on a rotating table, it was shown that rotation about the ampo...
متن کاملDegenerate seaweed to tilted dendrite transition and their growth dynamics in directional solidification of non-axially oriented crystals: a phase-field study
We report the results of a phase-field study of degenerate seaweed to tilted dendrite transition and their growth dynamics during directional solidification of a binary alloy. Morphological selection maps in the planes of (G, Vp) and (ε4, Vp) show that lower pulling velocity, weaker anisotropic strength and higher thermal gradient can enhance the formation of the degenerate seaweed. The tip und...
